Dragonfly Birthday Card
By Paris Dukes

How to hide the glue when you're working with vellum? One easy solution is to look for places to hide adhesive under your artwork. In this card, Paris covered the area where she glued the vellum by putting her tag over the top.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Place the card so it opens on the right hand side. Cover the card front with the upper left hand corner of dragonfly paper. Tear a 3 1/2”x6 1/2” strip of purple vellum, leaving the top and bottom straight. Tear a 2 1/4”x6 1/2” strip of white vellum, leaving the top and bottom straight. Adhere to center of the card, adding adhesive where it will be hidden when adding tag.
  2. Cut out the dragonfly artwork as shown. Cut out tag using the tag template from additional dragonfly paper. Tear a strip of purple vellum 2”x5 1/4”, leaving the top straight. Layer the vellum onto tag and add dragonfly artwork with foam tape. Glue onto tag, hiding adhesive for vellum under the artwork. Glue beads onto wings using Scrappy Glue. Add eyelet and fibers to the tag.
  3. Add foam tape to tag and the tag to the card, angling slightly.

Patterns:

Instructions:

  1. Turn the card so the fold is at the bottom. Trace pattern onto the card and cut out the purse shape from both layers of the card. Open the card and place it on your cutting mat. With your X-acto® knife, carefully cut out the flap shape beneath the handle from the card front ONLY. Draw around the opening on the inside back with a pencil, then cut the curved area only and fold the flap through the front space and down over the card front.
  2. Cover the card front with light pink dotted paper for the handles and dark pink dotted paper for the body of the purse. Use the pattern to cut the pocket from the light pink dotted paper, using the decorative scissors on the sides and bottom. Cut a small heart and the trim from pink vellum. Outline pieces with silver and write “You're Invited!” on the heart. Glue the vellum pieces as shown to the pocket front, then glue to the lower center of the card front.
  3. Cover the purse flap with light pink dotted paper, then cut out the decorative piece from pink vellum, using decorative scissors around the outside edge. Glue the vellum piece to the center of the flap. Cut the small inside square from the flap, then outline the edge of the square and its window with silver pen. Place the small square on two layers of foam tape, and trim the edges evenly with the square. Close the flap and place the square the foam tape in the center, pressing it firmly to the card front. Pull the flap up to open, and down to close.
  4. Tie a pink bow and adhere to the card front as shown. Cover the inside back of the card with light pink dotted paper (fold the flap to the back of the card out of your way while you do this), trimming the edges evenly with the card.
  5. Write the invitation information on the inside of the card with a black pen.
